Teuton Review

This week, Examiner.com posted a glowing review Teuton, an epic trilogy of graphic novels created by Fred Kennedy and Yours Truly. We are most pleased. Reviewer John Kirk writes of Teuton...

"This is a small, independently published comic that really deserves your attention."
We could not agree more. You can read the entire review here.

My thanks to John Kirk and Examiner.com for checking out the books.

Copies of Teuton, as well as prints and original art of mine, are all available at my online store.

Big Sexy Comic Shop

Fearless Fred and I fared very well at Fan Expo the other weekend. We debuted the much anticipated Teuton: Volume Three, the final installment in our medieval epic from Big Sexy Comics. The reaction from fans were phenomenal and we sold out of V.1 & 3 completely by Sunday!

With that said, copies of Teuton V.3 are available for purchase online at the Big Sexy Comic Shop!

There's actually a ton of great stuff at the online store, including all three Teuton books, prints, and original art by Yours Truly.

Recently added to the store are my Superman Unchained and Green Lantern/Silver Surfer prints for just $10 each.

As well, come painted sketches from Fan Expo 2013 are up. Check it all out!

TEUTON Vol.3 Wrapped up!

The third and final Teuton book is wrapped. And I do mean wrapped, babe. It's off to the printer and everything. I'm excited about that, and I'm excited for you, the people, who will get to see it and hold it and purchase it at Fan Expo in August.

Yes, my lovelies, the future is bright and full of hope. But it wasn't always so. There was a time not long ago where the fear of not finishing Volume Three was nearly a horrible reality. Somewhere in the multiverse there's a timeline where I did not finish Volume Three, and that dark future resembles the Age Of Apocalypse. Probably. Anyway.

Take a look back on those days of uncertainty with these cover...

Big Sexy Happenings This Week...

Recently I sat down with my friend and creative partner, Fred Kennedy, for another of his podcasts wherein we discuss working on indie comics. Joining me this time at the indie creator roundtable were Gibson Quarter and Ricky Lima. Both great dudes, both well spoken and insightful. It was a good a chat.

If you haven't already checked out these "Fredcasts" you would do well to listen to a few--or all of them. Fred's interviewed many amazing guests, the majority of them comic book superstars, and each of them infinitely more interesting than myself.

That said, you should also totally listen to the one I just did, which you can right here. I have not listened to it however, and I probably won't, because listening to my own voice is torture I don't need at the moment.

In other Fred & Adam related news, this weekend is Toronto ComiCon, and you can bet your booties we'll be there. At table P24 in fact, selling copies of our newly reprinted Teuton: Volume One!

But if you're not hitting up the old comic convention this weekend, you can always snag a copy of Teuton over at our Big Sexy Comic Shop. We have a deal running till Friday, 8th where you get a free colour sketch with every purchase!

TEUTON Trailer

In a recent podcast with Fred Kennedy, Gibson Quarter, Ricky Lima and myself, Fred begged Ricky to cut a trailer for our graphic novel, Teuton.

What you see is the result of that conversation.

Thanks so much to Ricky for the support and his efforts!

BIG SEXY COMICS

The past couple weeks have been heavy with web work and design. The new and improved website for Big Sexy Comics will be going live very, very soon and I can't wait for it to be ready. I'll have two blogs to upkeep!

The old site was the bane of my existence. For starters, the wrong artist was credited for Teuton. You know how awkward it is sending links to potential clients and/or editors only to have them ask why it says someone else drew my book? Secondly, the comic reader was not user friendly. Many people related their bungled attempts to navigate the comic. Lastly, the thing was rarely updated. It got to a point where I stopped directing people to the site because I couldn't rely on it to leave a good impression. In fact, the epic failure (in my opinion) of the site was the direct cause for me be proactive on this blog. If BSC.com had worked out the first time I wouldn't have this blog that nobody reads!

Getting our act together on the site brought another important aspect of the Big Sexy Comics brand to mind--the logo.

A while back Fred and I had to ask ourselves what our game plan was in comics. Was Big Sexy Comics and it's properties means to an end? Hopeful springboards to professional work, or were we going to build our own house and take it the distance? We landed somewhere in between. As we both crave a perceived legitimization by finding work with publishers, we also love what we're creating and work at honing or storytelling skills with our own material. Big Sexy Comics will always be our stable, regardless of what else we do. To keep that stable up, Fred had the website rebooted and we're looking to take our books to market. Currently our books, specifically Teuton Volumes 1 & 2, are carried by a handful of stores in the GTA, and although they're available for purchase online at Indy Planet, we haven't advertised our focused on marketing. So while we remain hopeful creators, we've learned we're also terrible businessmen.

This year we aim to change that by pulling our heads out of our asses and fully getting behind the books we've worked so hard to create. I think. To do that I felt we needed a new logo, and after hours of work I presented Fred with a host of options, emphasizing my personal choice. He did not go for it and I was crestfallen. If you've worked with me then you know I can be picky, pushy and strong headed. With Fred I've got my way with many things, including with this website, so bearing that in mind I applied some gentle insistence to see things my way. Nope. He likes what he likes, so I've relented. Check out this cover mock-up to see what it came down to:

COMMISSIONS

Last weekend I finally got around to completing an X-Men Legacy sketch cover my pal Ricky Lima wanted me to do since October or November. Poor, patient fellow. Creatively speaking, Ricky is an unusual and fascinating individual, so when he asked that this particular cover be somewhat more abstract than a typical super-hero pin-up, I had to give it some thought. When the mood struck, however, the thing practically painted itself :

I got to do some more cover sketches later/earlier in the week at a sudden guest appearance at Stadium Comics' Transformers event. I can't draw Transformers for beans, but luckily nobody asked:

I've got one other commission on the go right now and I'm pretty jazzed about it. I won't get into specifics, but it's going to be super fun:

TEUTON

Work on Teuton is going well. After a month away from drawing Undertow #3, re-opening Fred's script felt like coming home. I will say, however, that working on something completely different gave me a sense of freedom and opened me up creatively. I learned a thing or two that I'm excited to bring into Volume 3. I've also learned some valuable lessons in inking from the very skilled gents at RAID and I'm trying hard at disciplining myself to be more controlled and more mindful of where I put my lines.

Speaking of getting back into the script, I must have roughly drafted pages 16 & 17 dozens of times before settling on what is now a double-page spread. There was so much cohesive action happening in the two pages that it just made sense to join them.

This Week In Drawing... 002

It's Friday, which means it's time for my second installment of This Week In Drawing...

DEEP SEA

Last Saturday Stadium Comics hosted the first ever Halloween Comic Fest at Shopper's World, Brampton, which I attended along with many of my comic pals. It was a hoot. As always, I had an excellent time and was sorry I couldn't enjoy the company of pals like Ty Templeton, Shane Heron, Brian Evinou, Phil McClorey, Agnes Garbowska and Vince Sunico for a longer stretch of time. You can check out all the photos here at Stadium's Facebook page.

The very seriously cool thing about Halloween Comic Fest was the debut of Deep Sea, a self-published indie book by two very rad dudes, Ricky Lima (writer) and David Bishop (artist). I've known Ricky a while as a super funny chum but had never read anything he wrote. For shame! What Dave and Ricky serve up in their 8-page tale is seriously eerie and cool. David Bishop's been on my radar for a little while now as a self-made storyteller who is truly practicing the medium for the love of it. From his first issue of Stranger--his own twisted take on a zombie uprising--to the stylistic pages of Deep Sea, he's a promising artist who shows every sign of growth in the craft. The book is not without it's flaws--little things that hamper almost any indie book--but the strong, simple plot and clear storytelling show that both writer and artist have a firm grasp on spinning a yarn. For me, it's exciting to see two cool people make good music together. I'm super happy Rick and Dave's first effort came out so well, and I'm excited for what both these two creators will do in the future.

Be sure to hit up either Ricky or Dave to see how you can get your mitts on a copy!

THE JOKER

While at the event I sketched several things for nice folks, but my goal for the afternoon was to ink my portrait of the Joker in his New 52 incarnation. I boasted earlier on here that it was to be my Halloween card. Boy was it. Have a look at the process...

THE SHINING

This week at Spitballin' Comics we celebrated some of our favourite horror movie icons from the 1980's. I chose The Shining because it still gives me the creeps and I, like many other creators working from home I'm sure, can relate to the state of cabin fever Jack Torrance is eventually driven mad by. Well, the ghosts played a part too, but I as of yet have no experience with the super natural. Anyway, I had two different finals for my Spitballin' piece, but I chose one over the other because I felt the character needed to show strongly. Although I've come to like the second version better...

HALLOWEEN

I didn't dress up this year, but fellow illustrator Becka Kinzie paid me the great compliment of dressing as my pin-up character from Horror In The West. What's more, her make-up job is pretty fucking good...

TEUTON Vol.3

I've been working on the next long chapter of Teuton, starting with page layouts and thumbnails. Here's a smattering of what this week yielded...

DRAWINGS & UPCOMING

Here's a quick look at things to come from me in the coming weeks, including a peek at next week's entry to Spitballin' Comics...
