TMNT/Ghostbusters #3

Tomorrow sees the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Ghostbusters #3, and with it comes another variant illustrated by Yours Truly and coloured by Paris Alleyne.

I've been told by some that this cover is their favourite of my three covers so far (the fourth and final is out next month!), and while that's certainly nice to hear, it's interesting to note that this was my second concept for this issue.

Initially I wanted to see Casey Jones sporting a make-shift Ghostbusters uniform and proton pack, but based on the content of the story, IDW felt that concept would be misleading to readers. After all, if you see Casey Jones being awesome on the cover, it's logical you'd expect to see that reflected in the story. So a Concept B was born!

Wolf

After posting my ink sketch on Twitter, Christian Ward @cjwardart (artist and co-creator of ODY-C at Image Comics) was kind enough to colour it for fun.

How awesome is that?

Thanks, Christian! I'm really thrilled at your work.!

TMNT/Ghostbusters #2

Out this week from IDW Publishing is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Ghostbusters #2, which sports a Hot Topic exclusive variant cover illustrated by me and coloured by Paris Alleyne.

These things are hard to get, and I'm seeing copies of my variant for issue one going for over $20 on eBay. Big money, yo.

I'm also doing covers for issues 3 and 4, so be on the look out for those beauties!

The Geek Hard Show

While flogging my issue of ZERO (Image Comics) I joined Andrew Young and Mr. Green from The Geek Hard Show for their weekly broadcast. They're real nice guys and I had a fun time discussing Interstellar, a film I think received a lot of unfair hate from fan boys who are angry at Christopher Nolan over Man of Steel (which Nolan didn't direct) and The Dark Knight Rises (another imperfect film I think is treated unfairly), but I digress.

Listen to the program here if you like hearing soft spoken artist types get rail-roaded by angry fan boys.

You can also listen live every Friday at 7pm on RealityRadio101.com!

Pages and Panels

In more ZERO news, I was interviewed by Kyle Welch ( @KyleOverkill ) for his weekly podcast Pages and Panels. You can listen to the whole episode here.

It was a thrill to talk about not only my work on issue twelve, the series as a whole. A little known fact: I helped Michael Walsh ink the first issue of Zero over a year ago, and I've been invested ever since.

Edward Zero's story is a compelling one, a story I see often misunderstood by those who come to the book expecting standard action fare. Zero is not James Bond. It's a deconstruction of that archetype and an examination of what violence does to the male psyche. More than that, it's about unplugging from the war machine and rejecting state programming to find humanity. It's great subversive writing and I love it.

I'm less eloquent in my speech than I am in writing, but it's a worth a listen if you enjoy the series and behind-the-scenes looks at the making of a comic.

ZERO #12

ZERO #12 Cover Process: inks by Adam Gorham (left), design and colours by Tom Muller (right).

Yesterday saw the release of ZERO #12 (Image Comics), which I had the good fortune to illustrate. It's an especially big deal for me personally because this is the first mainstream comic I've anchored. Zero also happened to be a comic I really enjoyed as a reader. Having the opportunity to contribute to a story I was already invested in meant a good deal to me. I'm even more excited about what comes next, what ripple effects my work on this particular chapter may have to the series whole. As an artist, I was also really excited by the chance to prove myself on a greater stage, where wider audiences would see my work. Knowing this, I challenged myself, pushed my creative limits to leave an impression on readers. Without arrogance, I feel content in the belief that I succeeded in creating unique imagery that will have a few people take notice.

I don't normally stand on ceremony or celebrate milestones. Sometimes that feels a shame, but mostly I feel the pressure to keep moving forward with my work, and in so doing I forget to stop and find some joy in what I've accomplished. I'm still learning, still refining my skills. I never intend to stop. Here and now however, in the wake of this release that I've anticipated since starting the issue back in July, I can sit quietly and feel pride in this milestone. It feels good. I feel good about things.

I'm grateful to series writer Ales Kot for giving me the opportunity to join the ranks of artists who have made Zero special title, and all his support and advice through production. I'm thankful for my family and friends who showed their support and encouragement throughout the making of this book. I'm thankful to all the people who have so far shared their positive feedback to the book. Your words are appreciated.

Here's a look at my rough layouts and character sketches...

Adventure Time: Marceline Gone Adrift #2

Yesterday Boom! Studios announced their upcoming titles for February 2015. Among them was the Adventure Time mini-series, Marceline Gone Adrift #2, which sports a cover I illustrated and my good friend Brian Evinou coloured.

The first issue hits store in January. It's sure to be lots of fun. Don't miss out, especially when our cover rolls around in February!
